It's Blog Action Day!

10-15-07environment.jpgThe question is being raised: What would happen if every blog published posts discussing the same issue, on the same day?

Well, since I am curious to know the answer, I decided to participate in Blog Action Day on October 15th - today!

Our topic is The Environment.

My contribution to the topic is strictly personal - an examination of my small attempts to positively impact the environment. These little actions do not represent all I could do, but they are what are manageable for me at present.

  1. We collect all our biodegradable scraps in a "compost bucket" that we keep under the sink and empty twice a week into our compst heap. NO smells - I promise!
  2. I turn off all lights in rooms not being used.
  3. If my shower water is too hot, I turn the hot tap lower rather than the cold tap up
  4. I miminize my local driving (my daughter, thankfully, likes to walk to preschool!)
  5. I collect and sort (somewhat obsessively, to my husband's chagrin) paper, cans, bottles, cartons and all recyclable materials into the bins provided by the city
  6. I limit throwing food away to only that which is rotten or inedible (I grew up in the "starving Biafrans" era)
  7. I dry my heavy clothes like jeans and towels on a rack in the sun whenever possible.
  8. We have replaced as many light bulbs as feasible with compact fluorescent bulbs (they don't work on dimmers!)

I'd love to hear other suggestions from you. What are you doing to help minimize our human impact on the environment? What can you share with me and my readers?
