Can entrepreneurial physicians get "In the Zone"?
Monday, October 27, 2008 at 08:20AM
One of the twelve happiness activities proposed by Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky (this month's free Business Development series teleclass guest) in her book "The How of Happiness" is "Increasing Flow Experiences".
Well, let's hear from the originator of the concept of Flow, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi ("chick-SENT-me-hi" -- and I thought my name was hard to pronounce!) in the fabulous TED Talks series that I am such a fan of. In this lecture, he asks: "What makes a life worth living?"
(Thanks to Pam Slim for reminding me to check for the latest TED Talk.)
Briefly, being 'in the Zone" creates:
- Intense focus
- Ecstatic feeling of being outside reality
- Clarity
- Possibility despite difficulty
- Serenity
- Timelessness
- Passion
- Intrinsic motivation
- A sense of doing work for its own sake
I hope you enjoy this 18-minute talk as much as I did (click on the block below and the video player will materialize!)
What can you do to boost your personal combination of skills and challenges, and discover your own state of flow?
PS: From time to time, when I am working on my business -- thinking or writing or planning, I have a sense of the experience he is describing. I know it when I have forgotten to have lunch, I realize my back aches and my bladder has blown up to a 20-week abdomen. It can happen to entrepreneurial physicians!
