A day for the history books

I am proud to claim my American citizenship today as history is made. It (almost) eradicates some of the shame I have felt as a South African growing up under apartheid, too little and too ignorant to recognize the injustices of that era. And then too busy being self-absorbed and apolitical, as a high school girl and then medical student.
I salute a country that has largely overcome its deep prejudices and that is witness today to the swearing in of our first African-American president in a peaceful transition of power.
From one African-American (I am both, after all, by nationality and in spirit) to another, I say - Way to go, Mr. President, Barack Obama, and may you be blessed with the integrity, courage, humility and wisdom to lead us to our rightful place in the global community.
And may we have the patience, discipline, maturity and guts to follow you into a bold and creative future!
