Why physicians should care about SEO and other webby stuff

Business reporter Pamela Lewis Dolan of The AMedNews (the newsletter of the American Medical Association) is pounding away at her keys doing a good job of highlighting important ways for physicians to do a better job of marketing.

This week's article, "Helping search engines find you more quickly" provides an overview of how search engines like Google work to help your practice, or business, get found by the people who are searching for products or services just like yours.

She writes:

Search engine optimization uses some Internet tips and tricks to make sure your name comes up on top in a specific Web search -- say, for example, being the first allergist in Tulsa, Okla., to pop up if someone types "Tulsa allergist" into a Google search.

Numerous studies have found that few people look beyond the first page, or even below the first five or so listings of search results. Therefore it pays to be on top when launching any kind of Web presence.

There are several reasons physicians might want to use search engine optimization tactics, even if your practice is busy and you don't need to attract new patients. For starters, experts say, these techniques can help you gain control of what is found when people Google your name. Good placement in an online search also can help attract referring physicians...

... The first thing you need to do is to figure out who you want to reach with your Web site, said Linda Pophal, owner and CEO of Strategic Communications, a Chippewa Falls, Wis.-based marketing firm. The intended audience might be other physicians, a specific kind of patient or even people looking for an expert in a particular area of medicine.

Thanks Pamela - this is a useful service you are performing to help physicians attract the kind of business they really want (here is the article she wrote on Physician Branding, in which The Entrepreneurial MD is quoted!)

And her article is also a great segue to tell you about our free May teleclass - "Five Proven Strategies to Grow Your Physician Business or Practice via the Web", a guest interview with author and eBoot Camp president, Corey Perlman (he has written a favorite book of mine “eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business”)

Busy doctors with overflowing practices may not need SEO. And about having a web presence; Google et al will find you easily enough if you sign Dr SoAndSO M.D. on your website.

I agree - but in that case your assumption is that the patient knows the name of the doctor he or she is searching for. I am more interested in the situation where the patient is seeking a doctor or specialist and is using the internet as a way to find a doctor in that field and in his or her neighborhood. How do you make sure YOU (the MD or practice) get found first?

Working in the area of private practice reputation management on the web, I could not agree more. We find from experience that many people will see the dentist or doctors name on the list of their approved providers from their insurance and look up the name ... or once finding the name on google search for "dentist san francisco, ca", look it up for reviews or directions. There are so many sites like yelp that are working hard to capture the traffic based upon the doctors name.

These sites will have reviews and advertisements for competition right next to the doctors name. It is hijacking of sorts and very prevalent.

Healthcare providers, for the most part, seem to eschew the Web and Search Engines - until someone in their office points out a negative/misleading patient review that ranks #1 for their name - and yes, people ARE searching your name in Google if you are a physician that has been practicing for more than 2 years. It's just the way the world is now..

True. I agree with your suggestion of carrying out the basic practices while blogging. But sometimes, these suggestions are limited to blogging and not for the whole internet marketing. I read your post, and open a blog where I used to present some articles regarding the advancements in the medicine, new research going on the field, and other relevant topics. It works fine to gain a continuous attention from the patients. But the same didn’t work much for the website that I created for my clinic. I was eventually required to hire an SEO company.Hiring someone to optimize your website would be a really good idea if you have a new website and/or business venture. Using the services of an experienced Offshore SEO company will give you exactly the results you need. SEO companies are trained to generate a steady continuous flow of quality traffic in order to achieve more revenue for your business. This is one of those factors that many of the people are ignorant of. I am a physicist, and run my own clinic. Marketing was a part that generally doctors are unaware of. I made one website which I though would help me ameliorate my business, but it doesn’t make a great difference as it was far not found on search engines. Then, I came across a website designing and marketing company named as medicalwebexperts.com, with which I had a contract for advertising and optimizing my website to make it google-friendly. The main problem with my website was found to be improper website coding, which resisted my website to be listed in top most search. The company did well in reconstructing my website, making it popular using SEO techniques. The benefits are slowly coming into action. Website helped me getting a good sum of patients at my doorstep. Web marketing really helped my business work, making my investments in SEO worthy.
