No biz degree needed. There are entrepreneurial traits after all!
Friday, August 21, 2009 at 01:43PM Having preached for years that the prevailing wisdom of entrepreneurship is that there are no specific traits that characterize successful entrepreneurs, it seems that there is new thinking.
A recent study by Ace Hardware (what are they doing studying entrepreneurship? I wonder) revealed that most business owners attribute their success to hard work, rather than any specific training in business.
While this is merely a survey rather than some random-controlled double-blinded scientific study, I believe these results. Every one of my trailblazer podcast guests has verified this for me!!
Of the 500 small-business owners surveyed, 79 percent have at least some college education, but only seven percent think it is important to be "educated in business or finance."
Other traits that ranked high on the respondents' list of keys to entrepreneurial success were industriousness, motivation, perseverance, intelligence, good instincts and passion, in decreasing order. (emphasis mine)
Now it's that latter group of traits that interests me most. Particularly as they are the qualities many physicians possess. We are known for our willingness to work hard. We are just no longer willing to work hard for little reward and under-appreciation!
Time to be stand up and be counted, all you industrious, intelligent, stick-to-it-and-get-it-done entrepreneurial physicians?
