Hello, I'm Philippa Kennealy.

I know what it’s like to run a private practice, because I had one myself for many years. And I also can relate to those of you who have branched out from private practice into the business world of medicine – because I’ve done that, too!

My career path has taken me from private practice to hospital and company executive. I worked as Medical Director at UCLA-Santa Monica Medical Center and later served as CEO. I have also served as Executive VP in two internet start-up companies.

Most physicians think that marketing themselves means doing things that will sacrifice their integrity and take away from their respectable standing. I know I used to think so.

But after years of struggling to bring in patients and clients to my practice and businesses, I developed a system for attracting customers that isn’t only respectable and sincere, it’s also extremely powerful!

Turning An Elusive, Seemingly Sleazy Aspect Of My Business Into An Honest, Easy-To-Implement Process

I remember when I used to cringe at the thought of going out and finding clients. I hoped that they would appear magically – because I was good at what I did AND I was a nice person! I don’t recall how I thought that would happen – but I certainly remember that being my fervent wish.

I’d eagerly check my emails and voicemails, thrilled to bits when there was a prospective contact. And hopelessly disappointed at the long dry spells between messages.

I knew what I was doing wasn’t working AND I began to worry that I wouldn’t be able to tackle the fears and doubts I had about my “selling” abilities.

Fortunately (at times!), I am stubborn. Not being one to let an obstacle like this get the better of me – I hate failing! -- I made it my mission to succeed in attracting all the business I could handle…. and more!

Many experiences and much reading and studying later, I now gleefully look forward to my marketing activities, and even my sales conversations. And no, I’m not just weird. I simply enjoy having mastered a skill that was as elusive to me as snow in midsummer.

From these experiences, I’ve discovered there are several “down and dirty” secrets to keeping your hands clean as a marketer. No more fear about being no better than a used-car salesman!

I’ll share one secret quickly with you now:

The Secret of Recognizing Resistance : We are very resistant to the challenge of having to master a skill that eludes us. I think it is because, as physicians, others expect us to know the answers to everything. And we are accustomed to feeling like experts. So we hate not knowing something, and yet we feel stupid not being able to make business pour in of its own accord.

A successful business or practice = freedom from resistance!


How familiar do these “resistance reasons” sound?

Resistance Reason #1:

I find marketing embarrassing – it makes me feel like a pushy used car salesperson.

This is perhaps one of the most commonly-held thoughts that keeps physicians from communicating the real value of their offerings to the people they want to attract.

Resistance Reason #2

I never know what to say when I start a ‘marketing conversation’.

Most of us don’t even know what a marketing conversation is, let alone engaging in one successfully.

Resistance Reason #3:

I’m a doctor for goodness sake – I shouldn’t have to sell what I do.

This huge myth is the downfall of many a physician ego. We ALL have to sell what we do, even if it is to persuade someone to hire us, or to undergo a certain course of treatment!

Resistance Reason #4:

Ads are sooooo expensive and they never seem to work. I hate spending that kind of money and yet I don’t know what else I can do.

You are right – ads are expensive, and for many service professionals, ineffective. And there are MANY wonderful alternatives to ads that are both low-cost and produce much better results.

Resistance Reason #5:

I have no idea where to begin and I feel overwhelmed.

Again, a common one! Even if you have done your homework and have a sense of what needs to be done to attract business, you may feel weighed down by how much it seems there is to do.

Resistance Reason #6:

I don’t have the time to market…..

I would argue that you won’t need time to run your business, if you can’t find the time to market. There will be no business…. and no demands upon your time!

Resistance Reason #7:

I’m too intimidated by public speaking to do any presentations. I even find it hard to talk about my business when I am networking.

Fair enough! Public speaking is, after all, the number one fear we face. What if there were a much more comfortable alternative that ANYONE with your training and intelligence could master?
