Short Bio for Philippa Kennealy MD MPH CPCC PCC

Philippa Kennealy is President and founder of The Entrepreneurial MD. She is a business advisor, coach and teacher to physicians grappling with the challenges of launching, building or growing their own successful practices or businesses.

She is a board-certified Family Physician who left her own private practice in 1996 to embark on an administrative career as first Medical Director and then CEO of UCLA-Santa Monica Medical Center. Subsequently, she served as Executive VP in two internet start-up companies, before launching her first coaching and speaking business, Oya Consulting.

Philippa is passionate about professional development for physicians that permits them to reinvigorate their careers and overcome burnout. As reported to her repeatedly, physicians long for more control over their lives. She believes that entrepreneurship is one way to reintroduce physicians to their own creativity and resourcefulness. Her experience of working with physicians has shown her that, with encouragement, a belief in their own abilities, and a pragmatic approach, they are highly capable of making their inventive ideas a reality. They are, after all, a hard-working, dedicated, smart group of people!

Subsequently, she served as Executive VP in two internet start-up companies, before launching her first coaching and speaking business, Oya Consulting.

Philippa’s clients, both national and international, have come from a variety of backgrounds in healthcare (physician entrepreneurs seeking to go to the next level in their business, physicians in career transition, physician executives seeking to enhance their leadership skills, nurses, healthcare administrators, and other healthcare professionals). Many of her physician clients have left group practices or even corporate life to start their own practices or businesses.

She speaks and gives workshops nationally. Her recent clients have included hospital and health system medical and nursing staff, nursing societies, large group practices (retreat workshops), residency programs (workshops on career development), and a physician liability protection company.

Philippa is passionate about professional development for physicians that permits them to reinvigorate their careers and overcome burnout. As reported to her repeatedly, physicians long for more control over their lives. She believes that entrepreneurship is one way to reintroduce physicians to their own creativity and resourcefulness. Philippa was born, raised and schooled in South Africa, and is a citizen of the United States, having moved to the US in 1984. After completing high school in South Africa, she spent a year as an exchange student living with a family and attending high school in Spanish in Costa Rica. Her fluency in Spanish serves her well as an inhabitant of California.

After completing medical school and post-graduate training in South Africa, she sought adventure as a physician in a small rural town in Zimbabwe for three years. There, she learned to thrive on her ingenuity, with little in the way of medical technology to support her practice.

Philippa is married to a urologist, and has one daughter, whom she gave birth to just prior to her 48th birthday. She lives and loves in Los Angeles, continuously engaged in finding ways to thrive as a multi-dimensional woman – spouse, mom, family member, friend, and physician entrepreneur.
