One-on-One "The Entrepreneurial MD BizStartupTM Boot Camp"
There are five main challenges when starting a new business:
- Cultivating the mindset that allows you to be creative, innovative and decisive
- Outlining and then fleshing out your idea for your product, service or new practice offering
- Figuring out where to start, and how to sustain your momentum in spite of setbacks
- Planning the systems you need to put in place to run and operate your business
- Measuring your success and determining what needs to be improved.
If you can handle those challenges on your own, you do NOT need the guidance of an entrepreneur coach. However, if you could do better, perhaps you would benefit from having help.
I work with a very limited number of physician clients who are serious about starting or growing a business - be it your own clinical practice, an Internet-based business, a non-profit organization or a consulting firm! My clients realize that the only way they are going to truly thrive, and not struggle unnecessarily, is to be thorough and disciplined in their approach to learning about business.
What you need to be successful in business
The first thing people need is commitment. You must really want to invest sufficient attention and resources in your new business to acquire the skills of concept design, business planning, marketing and managing the infrastructure of your business. Ideally, this business should be your calling, not just a way to generate income. That passion, that desire to make a difference is a hallmark of successful physician entrepreneurs.
The second is "know-how". You will get this from being exposed to good information, being willing to read and learn from experts, and then PRACTICE! Which of course means being willing to tolerate some frustration, test, experiment, and make a few mistakes.
The third thing they need is mentoring and coaching from successful entrepreneurs. What this does is speed up your "know-how" - by as much as five, ten or even twenty times, if you work with someone who's been there before and has the specials skills to guide you. This means a lot less trial and error!
If you are the place where you are curious but need more information first, you can attend and participate in The Entrepreneurial MD's FREE monthly teleclasses

You can begin with a smaller investment of time and money by signing up to participate in the "beginner" Professional Seminar Workgroup, called "Design Your Lifestyle and Envision Your Business"

- You're committed to being a better business person
- You are willing to invest a certain amount of time, money and energy to acquire the skills needed to succeed in business

The topics we would cover in One-on-One "Entrepreneurial MD BizStartupTM Boot Camp" Coaching include, amongst others:
1. Becoming an Entrepreneur:
Overcome your self-doubt and resistance, get unstuck and start taking action (even little steps!) Think like an entrepreneur - we'll explore what that means to you. Begin to design your desired lifestyle. We will address what you want your life to look like, how you need to set it up to feel energized, excited and engaged, and what is realistic for your circumstances. Develop your creativity and expand your thinking, to get you "out of your box". Create your "concept" for your service or product. Figure out who your market is - who might want to buy what it is you have to offer? Test your idea – surveys, informational interviews, prototype, “guinea pigs”/test runs Articulate your business’s guiding vision and values. Outline and then detail your business model. Get your financial house in order in order to free yourself up to proceed. Consider practical matters – your exit from current job, legal considerations, insurance. Create the business plan, including your future exit strategy. Create the marketing plan - how will you create awareness of what it is you want to sell? Find funding for your new venture. Master the art of partnering/joint venturing.2. Becoming a Manager
Develop productive personal management practices – time management, habit management, interpersonal skills development. Put systems in place to manage your business – identify your various systems and document processes. Create your desired customer experience (business values in action) - create opportunities to get customer feedback. Decide on what technology support and business tools you need to be efficient and to most effectively deliver your service or product. Manage your business risk - figure out the right insurance coverage and how to minimize risk.3. Executing the Plans
Create a “dashboard” of your key metrics of success Implement your marketing plan
– by developing your sales conversation
– by creating your marketing “machines” Focus on what will generate cash within 90 days Figure out how to deliver consistently – figure out what your quick quality improvement cycles are. Adjust your marketing tactics and strategy based on the metrics, and what you are learning from them. Get ready to expand
– by creating your company’s culture with intention
– by hiring your first employee(s)
– by expanding your offerings
– by upgrading the offering to the next version based on end-user feedback
The Entrepreneur Coaching Format and Fees
We meet regularly over the phone (occasionally in person if you are local in Los Angeles) and we meet for three or four hours a month. You may decide how you wish to use your hours - whatever combination works best for your schedule.
Our first "Foundations" (getting to know you) meeting is always two hours long (or broken into two 60-minute meetings if your schedule demands it).
The fee for this 9-month coaching program will be quoted, once we jointly decide what your coaching preferences and needs are.
Please note: Your fee includes time I spend reviewing your business materials and website content etc, business and marketing plans, providing feedback, providing resources and communicating by e-mail or briefly by phone.
You will have the option of sending a check after receiving an invoice OR having each month's charges charged automatically to your credit card, once you have given your approval on a credit card charge form.
PS:
You also have the option of signing up and paying in advance for a full nine months of Physician Entrepreneur Coaching and receiving a 10% discount on the total fee that is decided upon. If at any time after four months of coaching, you determine that the coaching is not providing you with the guidance you need, I will refund you the difference between the discounted amount you paid and the four+ months of undiscounted fees you would have paid.
The reason why I mention committing to four months with this option is that is how long it takes to get some "traction" going after settling into the steady rhythm of a regular coaching relationship.
Experience has shown me that it takes at least nine (9) months of consistent work to get to the point where you feel you have gotten a business going or a product sufficiently developed, along with a business and marketing plan, even if it is not yet profitable (most aren't by that time!). Therefore, this program is delivered in a time frame consistent with at least that amount of time.
I request all new clients to consider committing to a coaching engagement of at least six (6) months, and to reassess what you have accomplished at that point, in order to determine how to proceed.
Getting over obstacles about starting your business or ramping up your clinical practice
The biggest obstacle to getting started in your new venture is usually NOT external. It's internal. All that negative self-talk, those beliefs and thoughts, and those limiting assumptions that tend to sabotage even your best intentions.
As a coach, I am trained in using powerful tools to transform the thoughts and beliefs that are getting in the way of your decisiveness and effectiveness. Perhaps the most powerful is The Work by Byron Katie - I use it in a practical way that is adapted to help entrepreneurial physicians free themselves of self-created stumbling blocks. Once these thoughts are out of the way, the sky can be the limit!
